Lampworking

My name is Christina Kvarnes, and I have been working with hot glass for ten years.
I find working with glass on a torch to be incredibly satisfying. To be able to walk into my studio and create that which has been on my mind, or to just let the brilliant glass flow naturally into interesting shapes, is my idea of a dream job.
Being a mom means, for me, not being able to spend hours at a time in my studio. Lampworking is perfect for me (or any person on a schedule) because I can work whenever I have an hour or two. There is no roaring furnace, enormous heat, or even bigger gas bill. I can walk into the studio, turn on the annealear, fire up the torch, make beautiful stuff, and then just walk away. Instant gratification! Although I have a nice big studio now, I used to make beads in comfort on our 6' X 8' back porch.
While the size of the piece you can make on a torch is limited, the ability to use color, texture, and shape in a piece is limited only by your imagination. I derive inspiration from whatever I see. Rocks, bugs, sea creatures, even my son s drawings give me good ideas.
I very much enjoy teaching lampworking, as well. It is a fine thing to pass on what you know and watch other people learn to express themselves creatively in new ways.
